Birren Chair of Gerontology at the USC Davis School of Gerontology with a joint appointment in Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences in biology. He is a leader in free radical biology, oxidative stress, and aging; having pioneered the study of protein oxidation, proteolysis, and altered gene expression during stress-adaptation; he also uncovered the role of free radicals in mitochondrial adaptation to exercise, and demonstrated the importance of diminished oxidative stress-adaptive gene expression in aging. ==Biography== Educated at the University of London, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California at Berkeley, he was previously a faculty member at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School.
